The Martyrs of Science, or, The lives of Galileo, Tycho Brahe, and Kepler Customer Reviews

:
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from David Land -- A solid summary of some amazing minds : There isn’t a lot to complain about with this book because it did exactly what you would expect. By delivering a summary of the lives of some amazing scientists the reader moves a little closer to an understanding of scientific history. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2013 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from James Jenkins -- Well written and formated : I have the free kindle edition of this work, the original is well written. It seems mostly historically accurate with a couple unsubstantiated opinions thrown in. I read the work with "text to speech" and the formatting seemed fine. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Interesting but archaic : The book was written in the 19th century and thus uses many archaic terms. I picked this book because I have visited the island laboratory that Tycho Brahe used and wanted to learn more about him and his fellow astronomers. I did, but it sometimes got a bit tedious. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Hey Mumser -- Two excellent men : This book fills in the gaps earlier writings often leave... I'd read much of Galileo but little of Tycho Brahe.....It does take more than one initial reading to get a better picture of the accomplishments of pioneers... • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- All about astronomy : While I thought this was a good read overall, I expected more about general science based on the title. The book is pretty much completely about astronomy. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Kolbert -- Interesting antique. : Hagiographic but outdated treatment of significant scientists. Much additional data has been learned since this treatment which fills in many of the holes . ( Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bruce Maybee -- Gotta Love Those Martyrs of Science : Ah, religion rears it's ugly head in the majority of these cases. Gave me a little more in depth about my favorites of science. It's the ones who die for their beliefs that I have the most respect for. A classic book and very informative. Not a fan boy so i don't rate books blindly, I honestly liked this book a lot. I didn't you would have known that by now. Didn't waste my money, which in this case was none but I would have paid for it if I was forced to. LOL ( Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JANICE BROWN -- The Knowledge we take for granted!!! : An Interesting very readable read. Not a big book but very satisfying. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2014 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Malcolm Evans -- The story of greats. : It is fascinating to read how the people of so many centuries ago managed to comprehend the mechanics of our universe by simple thought and observation. I wonder where those people are today. I chose the book because I love the history of science and biographies of great scientists. I was not disappointed on either account. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 1, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. L. Testa -- Short but full details. : I bought this book with the idea on getting a brief but detailed narration on Galileo's life. And that is what I got, it is an excellent overview and will prompt you to go out and find more on the subject. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 4, 2014 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Karl Barlow -- Like many works of this vintage : Like many works of this vintage, it has the old fashioned mileu that is not to everyone's taste. I find it refreshing when compared to modern prose and it doesn't obscure the subject which is thoroughly dealt with here. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Maguire -- My heros! : I am a novice amateur astronomer and really found that this book put quite a good deal of the subject in context for me - that is before Einstein and the late 19th century scientists, not to mention Higgs and Hawkings (hope I've spelt his name correctly. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 23, 2013 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Three Stars : Not the easiest book to read, simply because of the language of the time. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 2016 )
