  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wilhelmine Shuck -- AWE-some and inspiring! : I don’t remember how I happened upon this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from BMac -- This is recommended reading for anyone interested in Western US history : I am a history buff and I am thoroughly pleased with this book. John Bourke is an excellent writer with a keen eye for detail and a very keen, observing eye when it comes to the US and its dealings with the American Indian tribes, specifically the Apaches in Arizona. I am halfway through this book and I have had multiple ah-hah moments as the author makes a statement like "nothing has been so neglected by the Americans as an examination into the mental processes by which an Indian arrives at his conclusions; the omens auguries, hopes and fears by which he is controlled". Written by a man who fought the Apaches yet who admired them as a race, as a people, as a community. His respect for the tribes that he had exposure to shines through along with his ability to convey life on the frontier in the late 1860's early 1870's. If are interested in this time period and genre I highly recommend. My other favorite in this time period is "Son of the Morning Star - Custer and the Little Big Horn". I have probably read it 5 or 6 times over the past 25 years and I also highly recommend it. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from FantasymanTop Contributor: Photography -- Extremely well written memoirs of service with General Crook : Extremely well written memoirs of service with General Crook during the Indian wars of the West. Lots of details on life on the campaign trail, in camp, and, the general situation in Arizona in the 1870's and 1880's. Definitely a life in the saddle view of events. There is a lot of background on the Apaches and other Indians on the frontier, as well as the prospectors and cattlemen, and Mexicans that peopled Arizona at the time. The writer was keenly interested in social and economic issues of the day on the frontier, lots of information and insight into the politics and personalities of the day. Provides the reader with in-depth perspective on life in the Army on the frontier, as well as life in general for those that lived on the frontier. The hardships and dangers of life in Arizona and the Old West are presented with remarkable detail, along with commentary on social and political issues that surrounded events. Should be considered a primary source for a lot of background on frontier life in general. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ray P. Raudebaugh -- A must read for any student of western history. : I found this book to be surprising well written and very informative. It is a first hand look at the Anglo vs American Indian conflicts during the second half of the 19th century written by a man who was there. It gives insight as to the character of one of the main figures of these conflicts and I can only say that it is too bad that there were not more like General Crook. Had there been there would have undoubtedly been fewer conflicts. He was truly an amazing man. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ian -- At the sharp end : John Bourke gives a detailed account of the day to day challenges face by the US army in the south west, near the Mexican border and then in the north, near the Canadian Border when in pursuit of native americans. There is of course reference to General Crook, and it's clear Bourke has the greatest of respect for him. There are numerous other characters that populate the book, often with thumb-nail sketches. The general condition of life for people in the 1870s West is detailed enough for you to appreciate a frontier culture. On the actual conflict Bourke is totally honest. He can see the clash of cultures, he doesn't hold back on the raids perpetrated by Apaches and others, and the deaths they caused. On the other hand he comments several times on corruption within Indian Agents and politicians that led to outbreaks of violence. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chris McKeefry -- Excellent : Good book xxxxx ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Geoff -- Five Stars : very well written, though sometimes there is too much imformation about the west ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jesse Barr -- Great review of an Outstanding military with due credit to his advasaries : Well written review of the military career of one of the greatest generals of the US Military. Plenty of small details of the Indian war campaigns, covering lots of details of the Indians they were at war with, Indian scouts, cavalry, infantry and seasoned packers of the day. Great read for students of native history, Indian war era history, military and specifically cavalry history, early military posts, Texas towns, and detail right down to the names and officers of the men that were there. I found it fascinating. ( Reviewed in Canada on June 28, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from chet -- Arizona frontier : Wonderfully told by someone who was there and participated in its actions plus a complete description of all the towns like Tucson and Prescott as well as the geography of Arizona which they rode and marched through . Plenty of OMG,s this gives you the full flavour of life there and then and should be a must read for Arizona residents ( Reviewed in Canada on July 31, 2019 )
